Why does dust get in if the air is blowing out?

It’s physics. When fast-moving air passes a gap in the sheet metal (usually at joints or corners), it creates a localized drop in pressure (The Venturi Effect). This acts like a mini-vacuum, pulling surrounding debris into the air stream. You are essentially injecting attic insulation into the air you breathe.

The "Flashlight Test"

How do you know if you have leaks? You don't need a pro to start.

Go to your basement or attic where the ducts are exposed. Turn your HVAC fan to "ON." Turn off the lights in the room and shine a bright flashlight parallel to the duct seams. If you see dust swirling specifically around a joint, or if you feel air blowing on your face, you have a breach.

Crucial Note: Do NOT use standard "Duct Tape" to fix it. Ironically, cloth-based duct tape dries out and falls off in heat. You need Aluminum Foil Tape or Mastic Sealant (a paint-on goo that hardens like concrete).
